Indicators for Third Grade Students

Format a document using a word processing application to enhance text and include graphics, symbols and/or pictures.

For this indicator kids are supposed to be able to “select and use applications effectively and productively”. They are also supposed to be able to demonstrate their understanding of concepts of technology, technology systems, and technology operations. An activity I would use to help students achieve that is tie it in with a literature lesson of some kind. Say I needed to teach a lesson on poetry, the kids would then learn a few different styles of poems, eventually create their own poems using those styles, and then finally put them all together in a book. This book could be created using an application such as Microsoft Word. The students could put their poem on to the page, then they can begin to add pictures, add borders, and add fun fonts and word art. This lesson would tie in what we learned in class to how to effectively navigate an online application.

Graph data using a spreadsheet, analyze and produce a report that explains the analysis of the data.

For this indicator, students are also supposed to be able to learn how to use applications effectively and demonstrate their understanding of it. When I hear the words graph and spread sheet, my mind goes to math. So I would figure out how to tie this into a math lesson. Maybe the kids could go home and take down the number of siblings they have. They would bring those results back to the class and we would all figure out the data together. We would plug in each students numbers into an application such as Microsoft Excel. After the numbers are input, we would figure out how to create a graph so that we can see the results visually. The kids could make their graphs any color they wish to make it how they like it. After the data is gathered and put into a graph, we would each come up with a final thesis statement as to which number of siblings appeared to be seen more often.

Illustrate and communicate original ideas and stories using multiple digital tools and resources.

For this indicator, students will be able to “apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression.” If I were to incorporate this into a lesson, I would use science. I would take a concept such as metamorphosis and have a main lesson on that. After the lesson is done, the students can create a story using the theme of metamorphosis either literally or figuratively. They would then sign on to a computer and type their final draft into something like Microsoft PowerPoint. The students can decorate the background of the slides, add images, add fun transitions, add sound effects, and more to make their story come to life. This lesson would allow “students to demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge and develop innovative products and process using technology”.

Collaborate with peers by participating in interactive digital games or activities

For this indicator kids can “use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.” For this lesson I would use the website called Kahoot. To prepare kids for a test I can assign students into groups of 4. I can give them a code to Kahoot and it will be their job to collectively come up with 5 review questions for the class…with my help of course. We will rotate off between groups in class and get chance to play everyone’s Kahoot. It will be a way to introduce kids to more forms of ways technology can be used, and it will also allow them to have fun, and communicate with their peers. The creating of the questions will help the kids become more familiar with course content, and playing the game will contribute to the learning of other students in the classroom.
